Laser Welding vs Soldering: What It Actually Changes for Your Design

Laser welding is not a better version of soldering. It is a different tool with a different failure mode — and choosing between them early changes what your design is allowed to do.

The real difference is where the heat goes

Soldering joins by melting a filler alloy between two surfaces. To get that filler to flow, the whole assembly has to reach temperature. Everyone who has worked on a multi-component piece knows what that costs: stones already set have to come out, surfaces already finished have to be redone, and joints closed earlier in the sequence can open again.

Laser welding puts a short, concentrated pulse into a spot measured in fractions of a millimetre. The metal at that spot fuses with itself; the surrounding metal stays cool enough to touch. No filler is introduced, so there is no colour break at the joint and no second alloy to match later.

What that unlocks in a design

Where laser welding is the wrong answer

This is the part most supplier pages skip, and it is the part that matters when you are specifying a job.

A workshop that tells you only the first list is selling. One that gives you both lists is specifying.

How it shows up in a real piece

On a six-section openwork flower ring, the seams sit inside the petals where a solder line would be visible as a colour change and a softened edge. Welding joint by joint, with no filler, leaves a seam that dresses back to the same colour as the surrounding metal — the six sections read as one form rather than six assemblies. Read the case study.

We run two 200W laser welding units. That number is not a boast; it is a statement about what we have on the bench to work with, and therefore which routes we can offer you the same week you ask.

What this means for your project

If your design has joints near stones, near finished surfaces, or inside a hollow form, say so when you send the design — not after the first sample comes back wrong. The joining method is decided in the drawing, and it affects the sequence, the cost and what the piece can look like.
